How a nation treats its men and women also reflects their culture. Let us see the position of women in the Vedic Dharma.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color:#333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\">In the Vedas wherever special prayers have been made for children, they have always been for sons. Nowhere is a prayer or charm recited to be granted a daughter. For exmaple,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"color:#333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><em style=\"font-weight:inherit;\">1. O Bounteous Indra, make this bride blest in her sons and fortunate.\u00a0<strong style=\"font-style:inherit;\">Vouchsafe to her ten sons<\/strong>, and make her husband the eleventh man. [Rigved Mandal 10, Sookt 85, Mantra 45]<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color:#333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.islamhinduism.com\/images\/stories\/sons_rig_10_85_45.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color:#333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><em style=\"font-weight:inherit;\">2. This is thy Soma draught, O bright \u00c2ditya: take delight therein. To this mine utterance, O ye men, give credence, what good the man and wife obtain by praying:\u00a0<strong style=\"font-style:inherit;\">A manly son is born and gathers riches<\/strong>, and thrives for ever sinless in the dwelling. [Yajurved Adhyay 8, Mantra 5]<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color:#333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.islamhinduism.com\/images\/stories\/sons_yajur_8_5.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color:#333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\">3. Fathers, bestow on me a babe,\u00a0<strong style=\"font-style:inherit;\">a boy\u00a0<\/strong>enwreathed with lotuses, so that there may be here a man. [Yajurved Adhyay 2, Mantra 33]<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color:#333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.islamhinduism.com\/images\/stories\/son_yajur_2_33.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color:#333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\">All prayers for being granted a boy and none for a girl.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color:#333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><span lang=\"EN\" style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;color:black;\">Speaking of marriage Swami Dayanad Saraswati says,<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color:#333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><span lang=\"EN\" style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;color:black;\">\u201cIn Sanskrit a daughter is called\u00a0<\/span><em style=\"font-weight:inherit;\"><span lang=\"EN\" style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;color:black;\">duhitri<\/span><\/em><span lang=\"EN\" style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;color:black;\">\u00a0(from Du \u2013 distant, Hit \u2013 good), because the marriage of a girl to a man who comes from a distant country or distant part of the same country is productive of good.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color:#333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><span lang=\"EN\" style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;color:black;\"><em style=\"font-weight:inherit;\">\u201cIf the bride\u2019s people do not live very far from her husband\u2019s home, there is a possibility of her parents becoming poor, as whenever she visits her parents, they will have to give her something or other by the way of a present.\u201d\u00a0<\/em>[Satyarth Prakash Chapter 4, The advantages and disadvantages of distant and near marriages, Page 85]<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color:#333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\">Rigved Mandal 8, Sookt 33, Mantra 17 says,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color:#333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><em style=\"font-weight:inherit;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;color:black;\">\u201c<\/span><span lang=\"EN\" style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;color:black;\">Indra himself hath said, The mind of woman brooks not discipline,<\/span><span lang=\"EN\" style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;color:black;\">Her intellect hath little weight<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;color:black;\">.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color:#333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.islamhinduism.com\/images\/stories\/women_brain_rig_8_33_17.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color:#333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><span lang=\"EN\" style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;color:black;\">At another place, it is written:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color:#333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><em style=\"font-weight:inherit;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;color:black;\">\u201c<\/span><span lang=\"EN\" style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;color:black;\">There cannot be any friendship with a woman. Her heart is<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;color:black;\">\u00a0like<\/span><span lang=\"EN\" style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;color:black;\">\u00a0that of a hyena.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;color:black;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;color:black;\">[<\/span><span lang=\"EN\" style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;color:black;\">Rig Veda, 10\/95\/15<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;color:black;\">]<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color:#333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.islamhinduism.com\/images\/stories\/women_hayenas_rig_10_95_15.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color:#333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><span lang=\"EN\" style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;color:black;\">The\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;color:black;\">Krishna\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN\" style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;color:black;\">Yajur Veda says:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color:#333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><em style=\"font-weight:inherit;\"><span lang=\"EN\" style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;color:black;\">Women are without energy. They should not get a share in the property. Even to the wicked, they speak in a feeble manner.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;color:black;\">[Krishna\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN\" style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;color:black;\">Yajur Veda<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;color:black;\">\u00a0 vi. 5.\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN\" style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;color:black;\">8<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;color:black;\">.\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN\" style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;color:black;\">2<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;color:black;\">]<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color:#333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><em style=\"font-weight:inherit;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;color:black;\">A wife has no claim to property of her husband. The wealth that she earns is not her but her husband\u2019s. [Manu Smriti\u00a0 Chapter 8, Sholka 416]<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color:#333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;color:black;\">A girl without a brother is called\u00a0<em style=\"font-weight:inherit;\">Abhratr<\/em>\u00a0and it is prohibited to marry such a girl.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color:#333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;color:black;\">The Atharva Ved says,<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color:#333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><em style=\"font-weight:inherit;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;color:black;\">Those maidens there, the veins, who run their course in robes of ruddy hue, must now stand quiet, reft of power, like sisters who are brotherless. [Atharva Ved Kaand 1, Sookt 17, Mantra 1]<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color:#333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.islamhinduism.com\/images\/stories\/brotherless_ath_1_17_1.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color:#333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;color:black;\">Explaining this word, Nirukt, which is the oldest Indian treatise on Etymology,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;color:black;\">Philology and Semantics, says,<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color:#333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><em style=\"font-weight:inherit;\">They stand like women who have no brother, and whose path is\u00a0 obstructed with regard to procreation and the offering of the sacrificial cake. With these words the simile implies the prohibition of marrying a brotherless maiden.[Nirukt 3:4]<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color:#333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;color:black;\">Shatpath Brahman, preachings of the \u2018Yajur Veda\u2019 says,<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color:#333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><em style=\"font-weight:inherit;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;color:black;\">He (the Adhvaryu) then mixes it with the residue (of ghee) which is left in the prakaran\u00ee spoon. Now other libations he completes by mixing, but this one he diminishes; for ghee is a thunderbolt, and by that thunderbolt, the ghee, the gods smote the wives and unmanned them, and thus smitten and unmanned they neither owned any self nor\u00a0<strong style=\"font-style:inherit;\">did they own any heritage<\/strong>. And in like manner does he now, by that thunderbolt, the ghee, smite the wives and unman them; and thus smitten and unmanned, they neither own any self<strong style=\"font-style:inherit;\">\u00a0nor do they own any heritage<\/strong>. [Shatpath Brahman; Kaand 4, Adhyay 4, Brahaman 2, Kaandika 13]<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color:#333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;color:black;\">The same Shatpath Brahman says,<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color:#333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><em style=\"font-weight:inherit;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;color:black;\">\u201cAnd whilst not coming into contact with S\u00fbdras and remains of food; for this Gharma is he that shines yonder, and he is excellence, truth, and light;\u00a0<strong style=\"font-style:inherit;\">but woman, the S\u00fbdra, the dog, and the black bird (the crow), are untruth: he should not look at these, lest he should mingle excellence and sin, light and darkness, truth and untruth<\/strong>. [Kaand 14, Adhyay1, Brahman1, Kaandika 31]<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color:#333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\">A woman can never ask for divorce, even if her husband ill treats her. Manu says,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color:#333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><em style=\"font-weight:inherit;\">Though destitute of virtue, or seeking pleasure (elsewhere), or devoid of good qualities, (yet) a husband must be constantly worshipped as a god by a faithful wife. [Manu Smriti 5:154]<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color:#333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\">Swami Dayanand Saraswati is teaching us in Satyarth Prakash how to choose a perfect wife. Listen to him.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color:#333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><em style=\"font-weight:inherit;\"><span lang=\"EN\" style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;color:black;\">\u201cLet a man never marry one who is pale and anaemic, nor one who is altogether a bigger and stronger person than himself or has a redundant member, nor one who is an invalid, nor one either with no hair or too much hair or too much hair, nor one immoderately talkative, nor one with red eyes.\u201d MANU 3: 8.<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color:#333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><em style=\"font-weight:inherit;\"><span lang=\"EN\" style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;color:black;\">\u201cNor one with the name of star,of a tree,or of a river, or of a mountain.<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color:#333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><span lang=\"EN\" style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;color:black;\">So Hindu men should not marry women who are named Ashvini, Ganga, Saraswati, Himalaya, etc.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color:#333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><em style=\"font-weight:inherit;\"><span lang=\"EN\" style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;color:black;\">\u201cLet him choose for his wife, a girl who has a graceful figure without any deformity, who has a pretty name, who walks gracefully like a swan or an elephant, who has fine hair and lovely teeth, and whose body is exquisitely soft.\u201d MANU 3: 10<\/span><\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color:#333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><strong style=\"font-style:inherit;\"><span lang=\"EN\" style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;color:black;\">[Satyarth Prakash, Pages 89, 90]<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color:#333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><span lang=\"EN\" style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;color:black;\">He forgets to teach how to choose a husband.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color:#333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><span lang=\"EN\" style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;color:black;\">The \u2018Vedas,\u2019 also talk about \u2018Niyog\u2019 the custom of childless widow or woman having sexual intercourse with a person other than her husband to beget a child. In simple words \u2018Niyog\u2019 means sending a married woman or widow to a particular man for sexual intercourse so that she gets a son. Indication of this custom is available in Rig Veda.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color:#333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><span lang=\"EN\" style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;color:black;\">\u00a0In \u2018Aadiparva\u2019 of \u2018Mahabharata\u2019 (chapters 95 and 103), it is mentioned that Satyawati had appointed her son to bestow sons to the queens of Vichitrvirya, the younger brother of Bhishma, and as a result of which Dhartrashtra and Pandu were born. Pandu himself had asked his queen, Kunti, to have sexual intercourse with a Brahmin to get a son (Aadi Parva,\u2019 chapters 120 to 123).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color:#333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><span lang=\"EN\" style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;color:black;\">It has been said in \u2018Aadi Parva\u2019 (chapters 64 and 104), that when Parshu Ram started killing the Kshatriyas, thousands of female Kshatriyas started going to Brahmins to get sons. Similar references are found at other places in \u2018Mahabharata\u2019 also. With regard to \u2018Niyog\u2019, there are detailed discussions at a number of places in other religious books.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color:#333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><span lang=\"EN\" style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;color:black;\">In Nirkut, the meaning of \u2018dewar\u2019 that is, husband\u2019s younger brother, has been given as \u2018Duvitya Var\u2019 that is, the second husband (Nirukt 3:15).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color:#333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><span lang=\"EN\" style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;color:black;\">An ancient commentator of \u2018Manu Smriti\u2019 (Manu\u2019s Code), Meghatithi has clearly accepted the existence of \u2018Niyog\u2018 (quoted from \u2018Dharam Shastra Ka Itihas\u2019, by Bharatratan Mahamahopdhyay, Dr P.V. Kane, Part I, page 341).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color:#333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><span lang=\"EN\" style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;color:black;\">In the last century, Swami Dayanand Saraswati had claimed to have written a commentary free from defects in the interpretation, of the ancient commentators on the \u2018Vedas.\u2019 Dayanand had not only accepted the prevalence of \u2018Niyog\u2019 but also on the basic of \u2018smritis\u2019 (codes of traditional Hindu laws), discussed \u2018Niyog\u2019 in great detail in the language of the \u2018Veda mantras\u2019 (Vedic hymns). According to him there was a law that a woman or a man could have sexual intercourse with eleven persons. If no child was born from the one, then a woman could go to another. If even then she was unable to beget a child, then she could go to the third and so on till she had intercourse with eleven men (Dayanand\u2019s commentary on Rig Veda, 10\/85\/45).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color:#333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><span lang=\"EN\" style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;color:black;\">Woman was sometimes even forced to have sexual intercourse with men in the custom of \u2018Niyog\u2019. \u2018Devtas, Rishis, Munis\u2019 and \u2018Brahmins\u2019 used to participate in \u2018Niyog\u2019 (see \u2018Mahabharata Aadi Parv; chapters 64,95,103, 104).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color:#333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><strong style=\"font-style:inherit;\"><span lang=\"EN\" style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;color:black;\">Chastity of woman was not safe<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color:#333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><span lang=\"EN\" style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;color:black;\">In the name of \u2018beejdan\u2019 (seed donation), they used to have sexual intercourse with issueless women. This was a cruel religious custom and the chastity of women was not safe. The so-called caretakers of the religion were allowed to have sexual intercourse with another man\u2019s wife. From \u2018Niyog pratha\u2019, it can be inferred without fear of contradiction that the women were looked upon as mere child-producing machines.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color:#333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><span lang=\"EN\" style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;color:black;\">In \u2018The Position of Women in Hindu Civilization\u2019, Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar writes: \u201c<em style=\"font-weight:inherit;\">Though woman was married to a man, she was considered to be the property of the entire family. But she was not getting share out of the property of her husband, only the son could be the successor to property.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color:#333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><span style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;\"><span lang=\"EN\" style=\"font-weight:inherit;font-style:inherit;color:black;\">Gajdhar Prasad Baudh says:\u00a0<em style=\"font-weight:inherit;\">\u201cNo woman of the Vedic age can be treated as pure. Vedic men could not keep even the relations between brother-sister and father-daughter sacred from the oven of rape and debauchery \/ adultery named \u2018Niyog\u2019. Under the influence of intoxication of wine, they used to recognise neither sister nor daughter and also they did not keep in mind their relations with them. It is evident from their debauchery and adultery what the miserable plight of women was in the society then.
